Quick answer

By the state's latest count, Santa Clara added housing faster than any other Bay Area city, and it hosts a dense cluster of technology buildings, so its fleets are service vans, utility crews and builders' pickups. Put them on one business auto policy, generally rated by overnight address, ask the carrier for the endorsements each contract names and start from a $1 million combined single limit.

01Why businesses in Santa Clara buy commercial auto

Santa Clara grew faster than any other city on our Bay Area list. The Department of Finance put its population at 138,011 in January 2026, up 2.93% in a single year, and its housing stock grew 5.12%, from 54,109 units to 56,881. By our reading of the DOF table, that's the second-fastest housing growth among California cities of 40,000 or more people and the fastest of any Bay Area city. Those 2,772 new units meant framing, drywall, electrical, plumbing and site work, plus the trucks that carried it.

Commercial work runs alongside. The city's economic development office says more than 12,000 businesses have come to Santa Clara, that more than $3 billion in new development projects is on the horizon and that the city-owned electric company, Silicon Valley Power, keeps utility rates low. Census ZIP Code Business Patterns counts about 290 construction businesses and about 545 transportation and warehousing, wholesale and repair businesses with a Santa Clara postal address.

For coverage, that means cargo vans with shelving and ladder racks, service bodies for mechanical crews and pickups with trailers for the builders, with physical damage coverage sized to include the upfits. Business auto coverage in California explains how the pieces fit on one policy.

Housing growth on that scale changes the driving, too: Active job sites mean trucks queued at the curb, lumber and drywall deliveries on narrow new streets and crews that hired quickly to keep up. A clean driver list and recent MVRs are often the first things underwriters want to see from a builder whose fleet has grown fast.

03Driving and garaging in Santa Clara

Lawrence, San Tomas, Central and Montague expressways cross Santa Clara, US-101 runs through its northern half and SR-237 along the top, and I-880 and I-280 skirt its eastern and southern edges. Great America Parkway, Tasman Drive, Bowers Avenue, Scott Boulevard and El Camino Real carry most of the service traffic, and event days at Levi's Stadium can jam the Tasman and Great America corridor for hours.

North of US-101, data centers, office campuses and industrial buildings fill long blocks, and service vans spend much of the day in loading zones and gated lots. Most vans go home with technicians in Santa Clara, Sunnyvale or San Jose and are typically rated at those addresses; a few contractors keep a yard for trailers and the heavier trucks.

San Jose borders much of the city, and Sunnyvale and Cupertino sit to the west. South Bay and Silicon Valley fleet insurance covers the rest of Santa Clara County.

Data center work runs on its own clock. Escorted access, dock time slots and overnight cutovers put vans on the road at odd hours, so tell the underwriter if technicians routinely drive between midnight and dawn.

04The fleet hazard to plan for in Santa Clara

For Santa Clara, the earthquake question is mostly about ground: USGS liquefaction hazard maps for the northern Santa Clara Valley, which name Santa Clara among the communities studied, predict liquefaction in young levee deposits along the major creeks in all three scenarios modeled, on the San Andreas, Hayward and Calaveras faults.

Vans in campus garages and yards near creek channels deserve the closest look, and our earthquake guide for Silicon Valley fleets walks through how comprehensive generally handles a van damaged in a garage or yard. Dashcams and the rest of a fleet safety program underwriters often credit help with the everyday collisions.

Santa Clara commercial auto questions

Data center contracts in Santa Clara want specific insurance wording. Can you match it?
Often, with the carrier's approval. Many want a $1 million combined single limit, additional insured and waiver of subrogation endorsements, and some want more limit through an umbrella placed over the auto policy.
What do you need to add a truck in the middle of a housing project?
The year, make, model, VIN, value and garaging address, ideally before the framing crew takes the truck to the site. We then ask the carrier to endorse it onto the policy for the rest of the term.
Our vans park in customers' garages all day. Is that a coverage problem?
Generally not, since the van's coverage travels with it. Low-clearance garages can catch a ladder rack, and that damage is typically a collision claim if the van carries collision.
Do you write single vans in Santa Clara?
Yes. A single low-voltage or HVAC van working the campuses north of US-101 is welcome, and so is a fleet of up to 50, in any of our 25 trades.
Do framers and drywall crews need different coverage from our service vans?
It's usually the same business auto policy; the trucks differ. Stake beds and trailers hauling board and lumber are generally rated by weight and use, and the materials themselves are a builder's risk or inland marine question.
