Bakersfield and Kern County truck and fleet insurance
Commercial auto for oil field service crews, ag contractors, builders and suppliers across Kern County, from Delano and Wasco to Bakersfield and the foot of the Grapevine.
Quick answer
Kern County fleets face the second-highest vehicle theft rate of any U.S. metro, oil field driving and Grapevine closures, so yard security and radius tend to lead the underwriting conversation. Pickups, service trucks, dumps and trailers can fit on a single business auto schedule, and most Kern quotes are built up from a $1 million combined single limit.

01Driving realities in Bakersfield and Kern County
Kern County is big, and its roads reflect it. SR-99 runs north from Bakersfield through McFarland and Delano toward Tulare County, and the I-5 runs down the west side past Buttonwillow and Lost Hills to the Grapevine. SR-58 heads east over the Tehachapi Pass toward Mojave and west toward McKittrick, SR-178 climbs the narrow Kern River Canyon toward Lake Isabella, and SR-119 and SR-33 serve Taft and the west-side oil fields.
In town, the SR-99 and SR-58 interchange and the commercial corridors along Rosedale Highway and Stockdale Highway carry most of the service traffic, and growth on the city's northwest and southwest edges keeps pushing crews farther out. A plumber or HVAC tech can spend the morning in Bakersfield's older neighborhoods and the afternoon in a new tract twenty minutes away, and both kinds of street come with their own parking and backing problems.
The Grapevine is the route that shapes many Kern schedules. Caltrans puts the summit at 4,144 feet, with a 6% grade and about 83,000 vehicles a day, and full closures for snow average three to five a winter, usually for four to six hours. A Bakersfield contractor with work in Santa Clarita or the San Fernando Valley plans around those days, and a loaded truck on the descent needs its brakes checked before it starts down.
Oil field driving is its own discipline: lease roads, gravel and dust, heavy service traffic and long distances between Bakersfield yards and the fields around Taft, McKittrick and Lost Hills. Lease roads are narrow and often unlit, crews start early, and a pickup that spends half its day off pavement wears differently from one that stays in town.
On the valley floor, county roads run straight between farms, with slow equipment, few shoulders and intersections hidden by orchards and vineyards, and the Tehachapi Pass is windy enough that high-sided trucks feel it. Tule fog settles on SR-99 and the I-5 in winter, and summer heat is hard on tires, batteries and drivers.
Garaging runs from oil service yards in Oildale and east Bakersfield to rural yards and farm properties across the valley, and to newer business parks in southwest Bakersfield and Shafter. Many of those yards sit on open ground far from neighbors, which is part of why theft is the risk Kern underwriters often ask about first.
03What contractors and businesses in Bakersfield and Kern County run
Oil and agriculture still define Kern's work trucks. The fields around Bakersfield, Taft and Lost Hills support welding rigs and fabrication trucks, mechanics' and crane-body trucks and roustabout pickups, and spills or releases from that work usually fall to pollution coverage placed separately from auto. Grapes, citrus, almonds, pistachios and carrots support packinghouses and processing plants that need electrical contractors and their service trucks year-round.
Logistics has grown along the corridors, with distribution centers near Shafter and at the foot of the Grapevine, and wind and solar projects around Tehachapi and Rosamond bring site grading and road crews and electrical contractors. Housing growth in Bakersfield keeps framers, roofers, plumbers and HVAC contractors busy.
East Kern is a different country. Tehachapi sits up on the pass with its own winter snow and wind, Mojave and Rosamond face the desert and the Antelope Valley, and the Kern River Valley around Lake Isabella is reached by SR-178 through the canyon or the long way around. A Bakersfield company with regular work in those towns is running mountain and desert routes, not valley ones, and the underwriter should hear that from you.
Supply houses tie all of it together. Oil field parts, pipe, irrigation supplies and building materials move out of yards in Bakersfield and Shafter on flatbeds and box trucks to customers' shops, lease sites and job sites across the county, and supplier route trucks have their own page. When those trucks carry goods that belong to a customer rather than to you, motor truck cargo comes into the conversation.
Most Kern fleets are oil field and ag pickups and service and utility trucks, with dumps and trailers for site work. Heavier units are common in oil field work, so weight matters: Our markets are strongest at 45,000 lbs GVWR and under, and if any truck needs a Motor Carrier Permit, the MCP and MC 65 M filing guide explains how the carrier files it.
What an underwriter usually wants from a Kern account is a clear picture of three things. Where the trucks sleep and what protects them overnight: fencing, lighting, cameras, GPS. How far they go, including Grapevine runs and west-side lease work. And who drives them, with current MVRs for every driver, including the ones who only take a truck to the field now and then. For other permits and filings by weight, see California's trucking requirements by weight and use.

04Local fleet risks
Theft is the number that stands out: NICB's 2025 data ranks the Bakersfield–Delano metro area second in the country for vehicle theft rate, at 477.27 per 100,000 people. Statewide, the CHP counted 1,802 commercial trucks stolen in 2025 and recovered 80.0% of them, so a yard with fencing, lighting and cameras is worth describing on your application; vehicle theft hot spots around Bakersfield covers what auto coverage generally pays and where tools fall outside it.
Usually not. In Kern County, spills or releases from oil field service work around Bakersfield, Taft and Lost Hills are a pollution exposure, placed on its own policy apart from the auto coverage on the welding rigs and pickups.
Common mistake
Tools left in trucks overnight
Kern crews sometimes leave tools and parts in pickups parked overnight at open-ground yards in Oildale or east Bakersfield, which invites theft in a metro area ranked second nationally for vehicle theft rate, and the tools usually aren't auto property anyway.
Broker perspective
Flag the heavy units early
Kern oil field schedules sometimes include trucks heavier than 45,000 lbs GVWR; flag them at the start, because our markets are strongest at or below that line, and options for heavier units are often less competitive.
Coverage impact
Wait out the Grapevine; don't detour
A Grapevine snow closure generally doesn't change coverage, but sending a loaded Kern truck onto an unfamiliar mountain detour to beat it adds risk; Caltrans puts most full snow closures at four to six hours, so waiting is usually the sounder call.

Bakersfield / Kern fleet insurance questions
Do you insure oil field service pickups and welding rigs?
In most cases, especially for trucks rated 45,000 lbs and under. Tell us what each truck carries and how much lease-road driving it does; pollution liability from the work is typically written as a separate policy.
What happens when the Grapevine closes and our trucks are stuck?
A closure is usually a scheduling problem rather than a coverage one. Caltrans says most full snow closures last four to six hours; drivers should wait rather than try unfamiliar mountain detours with a loaded truck.
Which page covers Delano?
This one. Delano and the rest of Kern County are covered here; Tulare County is on the Fresno–Visalia page.
Will Kern's theft numbers make it harder to get a quote?
Most underwriters already know the data. What tends to help is showing what you do about it: a fenced and lit yard, cameras, GPS trackers and a rule that tools don't stay in trucks overnight.
Do you cover contractors working on wind and solar projects around Tehachapi?
Yes. Wind and solar sites around Tehachapi and Rosamond draw grading, electrical and fence contractors, all trades we place. Tell the underwriter about site roads and how far crews drive each day.
Some of our oil field trucks are heavy. Can you still help?
Our strongest markets are for trucks rated 45,000 lbs GVWR and under. We have options for heavier units, often less competitive, and we'll say so up front.
