Quick answer

If your business runs one to four vehicles, it usually needs business auto insurance rather than personal auto once a truck is titled to the company, used mainly for work or driven by employees. At this size, carriers typically rate each vehicle and each driver on its own, and the owner's driving record often counts most. We write single trucks in our 25 trades from a $1 million combined single limit, with lower limits where contracts allow.

01When a work truck outgrows personal auto

Plenty of one-truck businesses start on a personal auto policy, and it often fits until the truck starts working for a living. Signs it may no longer fit: The truck is titled to an LLC or corporation, it carries a ladder rack, a utility body or a hitch that's used every day, an employee drives it, or a customer's contract asks for a certificate naming your business.

Personal policies are generally written for commuting and errands, and many limit or exclude regular business use, heavier vehicles and commercial bodies. The real risk is finding that out after a crash on the way to a job. We walk through personal vs commercial auto for a work truck on a separate page, including where the line usually falls.

A business auto policy typically names the company as the insured, covers employees driving with permission and produces the certificate your customers expect. The coverages are largely the same ones larger fleets carry, laid out on our commercial vehicle insurance quote page. 02How carriers look at one to four vehicles

With so few vehicles, there's no fleet history to average out a bad year, so carriers usually rate the pieces individually: each vehicle's type, weight, value and garaging ZIP and each driver's age, experience and record. In a one-truck business, the owner is usually the main driver, which tends to make the owner's MVR the most important document in the file.

A few other things tend to carry extra weight at this size. Proof of prior commercial auto coverage, without lapses, tells an underwriter the business has been insured continuously. Radius matters: A pest control truck that stays within one city usually rates differently from a welding rig that crosses three counties a week. And a single at-fault claim is a big share of a short record, so it tends to stay visible for a few renewals.

None of that is a reason to avoid commercial coverage. It's a reason to keep a clean record and keep the policy in force between jobs.

More detail

03Owners, family members and the first hire

In a small business, the people who drive the truck aren't always on the payroll. A spouse who runs to the supply house, an adult child who helps on Saturdays and a friend who moves the truck on a job site are all drivers most carriers want to know about, especially when the truck is parked at home.

Listing everyone who may drive keeps the policy accurate. If someone in the household has a poor record and never drives the truck, some carriers allow that person to be excluded by name, which keeps their record off the rating but generally means there's no coverage if they drive it anyway.

The first employee driver usually changes things. Pull their MVR before they take the keys, write down what would disqualify a driver and tell us before they start, not at renewal.

04From four vehicles to five

The jump from four vehicles to five is when many carriers start looking at a business as a fleet. That can open up options, since some fleet programs don't start until about five power units, and it's a natural point to put every vehicle on one schedule if they aren't already.

Adding the fifth truck generally works like adding any other: Send the VIN, value, garaging ZIP and usual driver before it goes to work. If you expect to keep growing, our page on insurance for a fleet of 5 to 10 trucks explains what carriers often start asking once you're there. We quote every size, from one truck to fifty, as a fleet insurance agency built for California businesses.

05Trades and vehicles at one to four units

Single trucks are welcome in all 25 trades we write. Some trades run small more often than others: an independent welder with one rig, a pest control operator with two pickups, an alarm installer with a pair of vans, a pool service company with three trucks or a carpenter with a pickup and a utility trailer.

Vehicle pages explain how each body type is typically rated. A one-truck business usually starts with commercial pickup truck insurance or insurance for work vans, and every other body type is on the insurance for California work trucks page. Trade pages such as welding truck insurance and pest control commercial auto insurance cover what each trade carries and the claims it tends to see.

Theft is worth planning for even with one truck. The CHP's 2025 theft fact sheet names older Chevrolet Silverados as the top stolen personal truck for the fourth year in a row, and many one-truck contractors drive exactly that. Comprehensive coverage generally pays if it's taken; see comprehensive and collision for work trucks.

06Limits for a one-truck business

A $1 million combined single limit is our starting point even for one truck, since general contractors and commercial customers commonly require it before you set foot on a job. If your work doesn't involve contracts like that, $300,000, $500,000 or $750,000 can keep the policy leaner.

Two add-ons are worth a look at this size. If you or an employee sometimes use a personal car for business, coverage for employees' own cars on company business can protect the business. And if your crew is hurt by a driver with no insurance, uninsured motorist coverage for business vehicles may pay for their injuries. Our page on commercial auto liability insurance explains the limit itself.

Questions about insuring 1 to 4 vehicles

Do I need commercial auto for one truck I use for my business?
Usually, yes, if it's titled to the business, used mainly for work, carries tools or materials or is driven by employees. A personal policy may not respond to a claim during business use.
Can my business auto policy cover a truck titled in my own name?
Often, yes. Many carriers will write a sole proprietor's personally titled work truck on a business auto policy; tell us how the title reads when you ask for a quote.
What does a carrier need to quote one or two trucks?
Typically the VIN, garaging ZIP and value for each vehicle, the license number and date of birth for each driver and your current declarations page if you have one.
Will my personal driving record affect my business auto quote?
It likely will. In a small business, the owner is usually a listed driver, and carriers generally rate each driver's MVR, including tickets from personal driving.
Is there a minimum number of vehicles?
No. A single truck is welcome in any of our 25 trades, and fleets run up to 50 vehicles.
What happens when I add a fifth vehicle?
It's usually added to the same policy by endorsement. At around five vehicles, some carriers begin treating the account as a fleet, which can open more options.
