Commercial auto for winery and brewery suppliers, contractors and distribution fleets across Marin, Sonoma, Napa and Solano counties, from San Rafael to Santa Rosa and Vacaville.
Quick answer
North Bay and Solano fleets plan around fire season and long runs on US-101, SR-37 and I-80. Put comprehensive on every truck you'd want replaced after a fire, list each one where it's garaged, and the whole schedule of pickups, box trucks and trailers can go on one policy, generally beginning at a $1 million combined single limit.

How it works
Tell us about your fleet. One short form.
We shop top-rated national carriers with one submission.
You compare options side by side; we bind and the carrier handles filings, if needed.
US-101 is the North Bay's main street. From the Golden Gate it runs through Marin, past Sausalito, San Rafael and Novato, then into Sonoma County through Petaluma, Rohnert Park and Santa Rosa toward Healdsburg. Between Novato and Petaluma the freeway runs through the Marin–Sonoma Narrows, and a crash there can back traffic up quickly in both directions.
East of the bay, Solano County runs on I-80. The freeway crosses the Carquinez Bridge into Vallejo, passes the I-680 interchange and the truck scales at Cordelia and continues through Fairfield, Vacaville and Dixon toward Sacramento with a steady stream of freight. I-680 links Cordelia with Benicia and the Benicia Bridge, and SR-12 connects Sonoma, Napa, Fairfield and Rio Vista.
Marin is its own driving problem. Away from US-101, towns like Mill Valley, Larkspur and San Anselmo climb into the hills on narrow, winding streets with little parking and tight turns for anything bigger than a van, and Sir Francis Drake Boulevard is the main way across the county. West Marin's SR-1 is two lanes along the coast. Many service companies keep their larger trucks at a yard in Novato or San Rafael and send vans up into the hills.
SR-37 joins the two halves along the north edge of San Pablo Bay, from Novato past Sears Point to Vallejo, on a low, narrow road across marshland that can flood in big winter storms. In Napa and Sonoma, SR-29, SR-12, SR-128 and the Silverado Trail are two-lane roads that fill with grape gondolas, harvest crews and visitors from late summer through fall, and the back roads of wine country are narrow, winding and often without shoulders.
Garaging ranges from vineyard yards and rural properties in Sonoma and Napa to business parks in Fairfield, Vacaville and American Canyon. Summer heat builds quickly inland in Solano, wind sweeps the Montezuma Hills, and morning fog fills the Petaluma Gap. Fire season reshapes the calendar from early summer to the first rains, when power shutoffs, smoke and evacuation orders can stop work across whole valleys.

03What contractors and businesses in the North Bay and Solano run
Wine country is a business-to-business economy with a lot of trucks. Wineries rely on welders and fabricators for stainless and steel work, refrigeration and electrical contractors and equipment repair crews, and the region's wineries and breweries deliver cases and kegs to restaurants, shops and distributors around the bay. Brewery and beverage delivery vans have their own page; direct-to-consumer home delivery is outside what we write.
Rebuilding after the region's wildfires reshaped Santa Rosa and the hills around it, and general contractors running rebuild crews, framers and landscapers remain busy there. Marin's older hillside homes support a steady remodel trade on steep, narrow streets, and landscaping crews with trucks and trailers work estates and vineyards across all four counties.
Hospitality is the quieter half of the wine economy. Hotels, resorts, restaurants and tasting rooms in Napa, Sonoma and Healdsburg run on service contracts for HVAC, plumbing, electrical and pool work, and those contracts usually want certificates naming the property as additional insured. Crews work around guests, often early or late, and park where the property tells them to, which is rarely where it's convenient.
Solano County adds distribution and manufacturing: warehouses and plants in Fairfield, Vacaville and Dixon, Travis Air Force Base and Mare Island in Vallejo, plus the business parks of American Canyon just over the Napa line. Those bring supplier routes run on box trucks under 26,001 lbs and site work on flatbed and equipment trailers.
Solano's farm belt adds another layer. Orchards, row crops and processing plants around Dixon, Rio Vista and the Suisun Valley keep equipment repair trucks, welders and electricians on county roads, and the trucks that serve them often run between the farms and the Fairfield and Vacaville business parks in one day. Those mixed routes, rural and freeway, are worth describing when the underwriter asks how far your trucks go and what they carry.
Harvest is the season to plan for. From late summer into fall, wineries add temporary drivers, borrow trucks and run longer days, and that's when the questions about who's driving matter most. Any seasonal driver should be on the driver list before the first load, and rented trucks for crush are generally a hired auto question that's easier to settle in July than in September. For permits and filings by weight, see the California commercial truck requirements page.

04Local fleet risks
Wildfire has reshaped North Bay fleets. CAL FIRE's record of the Tubbs Fire shows it starting near Calistoga on October 8, 2017, and spreading across Napa and Sonoma counties, and the fire seasons since have brought evacuations, power shutoffs and smoke days to the same hills. Wildfire season planning for North Bay and Solano fleets covers parked trucks and evacuation routes, and what the Santa Rosa rebuild means for contractor fleets covers adding trucks mid-term, hired autos and debris hauling.
Winter brings the opposite problem. SR-37 and low vineyard roads near the Russian River and the Napa River can flood in a big storm, so a yard plan that moves trucks to high ground makes sense in both seasons. In between, a power shutoff can leave a shop without its gate motor, fuel pump or vehicle chargers for a day or more, and that belongs in the plan too.
Generally through hired auto, if it's in place. Napa and Sonoma wineries that rent trucks for crush rely on hired auto coverage, and settling it in July is far simpler than sorting it out in September with rentals already rolling.
Common mistake
Planning for fire but not for shutoffs
North Bay shops sometimes plan for evacuation but not for a power shutoff, then find the gate motor, fuel pump and vehicle chargers dead for a day or more with the trucks stuck inside.
Broker perspective
New drivers meet harvest traffic
From late summer into fall, SR-29, SR-128 and the Silverado Trail fill with grape gondolas, harvest crews and visitors in the same weeks wine country businesses add temporary drivers, so the newest drivers meet the busiest two-lane roads. Brief them on the routes first.
Coverage impact
Solano routes mix farm roads and freeway
A Solano truck that splits its day between Dixon and Suisun Valley farm roads and the Fairfield and Vacaville business parks covers two kinds of driving, and underwriters usually weigh both, so a submission listing only the freeway miles undersells the exposure.

North Bay & Solano fleet insurance questions
Can a Petaluma brewery's keg van go on a commercial auto policy?
Usually, yes, for deliveries to bars, restaurants and distributors. Liquor liability is normally written on its own policy, and home delivery to consumers is outside what we write.
We're rebuilding homes around Santa Rosa. Can we add trucks fast?
Trucks can be added mid-term by endorsement; send the vehicle details before the truck starts work. Rentals for a short push are generally a hired auto question, which is worth arranging in advance.
Our crews commute over SR-37 from Vallejo. Should we tell the underwriter?
Tell them your usual routes and radius. SR-37's floods and closures are a scheduling problem more than an insurance one, but long daily runs are usually part of the rating.
Does Solano County really belong on a North Bay page?
For our purposes, yes. Vallejo, Fairfield, Vacaville and Dixon are covered here, alongside Marin, Sonoma and Napa.
Do vineyard trailers go on the auto policy?
Any trailer you tow on public roads should be on the schedule. The tractor or sprayer on it generally isn't auto and belongs on an equipment policy for machinery.
How should we handle seasonal drivers during crush?
Add them to the driver list before they drive, with license numbers so the carrier can run MVRs. A driver who isn't listed and has a crash in a company truck can make the claim harder for everyone.
