Quick answer

San Rafael fleets are mostly vans and pickups for the trades, plus tree service rigs, run out of yards east of US-101 and up narrow hillside streets. A single business auto policy can hold them, generally rated by overnight address, from a $1 million combined single limit with national carriers.

01Why businesses in San Rafael buy commercial auto

San Rafael describes itself as the economic heart of Marin County, and its contractor count backs that up. Census ZIP Code Business Patterns counts about 360 construction businesses with a San Rafael postal address, about six for every thousand of the 59,890 residents the Department of Finance counted in January 2026, plus about 260 transportation and warehousing, wholesale and repair businesses.

Population fell 0.49% over the year, while housing units grew 0.63%, and the city adopted an Economic Development Strategic Plan in 2023. Much of the trade work here is repair, remodel and upkeep on hillside homes, offices and commercial buildings across central Marin, done from vans and pickups, plus a steady volume of tree work run on bucket trucks and chip trucks.

Those vehicles can go on one business auto policy for the company, and a shop with a few vans should read small fleet insurance before it grows past five.

Marin work also travels. Crews based in San Rafael serve Novato, the Ross Valley, Mill Valley and West Marin, and some haul material over the Richmond–San Rafael Bridge from East Bay suppliers. Freeway one hour and a one-lane hillside street the next is what many underwriters picture for a Marin fleet.

03Driving and garaging in San Rafael

US-101 runs through the middle of San Rafael, and I-580 leaves it at the south end for the Richmond–San Rafael Bridge to the East Bay. Downtown traffic moves on the one-way pair of Second and Third streets and on Fourth Street; Francisco Boulevard East and West and Kerner Boulevard serve the business district east of the freeway; and Lucas Valley Road, Smith Ranch Road and North San Pedro Road connect the north end.

Yards and shops concentrate east of US-101 along Francisco and Kerner boulevards. Up in the hills, streets are steep and narrow with little parking, so many companies send a van instead of a truck and trailer, and a bucket truck or chip truck needs a plan for where it can set up without blocking the road.

Crews cross the bridge to Richmond, run north to Novato and south to Larkspur and Mill Valley. Commercial auto across the North Bay and Solano covers Marin's other towns.

The bridge approach and US-101 both back up at commute hours, so many companies start crews early and keep dispatch flexible. A crew rushing to make up time on a narrow street is a common setup for the minor collisions that fill loss runs.

04The fleet hazard to plan for in San Rafael

Wildfire is San Rafael's planning hazard: The city's March 2025 notice on the state's updated Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps says they largely mirror San Rafael's existing Wildland Urban Interface boundaries, which already carry specific building code requirements, and names China Camp among the State Responsibility Areas the maps cover.

Vehicles parked overnight at homes in those hillside zones and crews working there on red flag days are the exposure wildfire season planning for Marin fleets covers.

In practice, that means keeping trucks fueled and keys reachable in fire season, parking so trucks can leave without backing out of tight driveways and knowing two ways down from every hillside job.

San Rafael commercial auto questions

Our crews work hillside streets where a trailer won't fit. Does that matter to underwriters?
Many will ask which vehicles go where and who drives them. Sending vans up the hills and keeping trailers on flat ground is the kind of rule worth writing down.
We cross the Richmond–San Rafael Bridge for East Bay work. Should we say so?
Yes. Note which vehicles make the run to Richmond suppliers and how often, since bridge trips usually add to radius and mileage.
Do you insure tree service companies in Marin?
Yes, including chip trucks and bucket trucks rated 45,000 lbs and under that work Marin's hillside removals. General liability and workers' comp for the cutting itself are typically separate policies.
Are our trucks covered if a fire reaches the yard?
A parked truck burned in a wildfire is generally a comprehensive claim if the truck carries comprehensive physical damage. The building and tools are property and equipment questions.
Is a single painter's van enough for a commercial policy?
Yes, in most cases. A painter's van titled to the business or used mainly for repaints across central Marin belongs on business auto, and we write one van as readily as a fleet of up to 50.
