Quick answer

San Jose fleets run the full range: plumbers' and electricians' vans, roofers' flatbeds, manufacturers' delivery trucks and landscapers' trailers, spread across a city of nearly a million people. One business auto policy can carry the mix, with each unit usually rated at its own overnight address, starting from a $1 million combined single limit.

01Why businesses in San Jose buy commercial auto

San Jose is the largest city in the Bay Area by a wide margin. The Department of Finance estimated 980,434 residents in January 2026, about 135,000 more than San Francisco, down 0.29% over the year, and 350,935 housing units, up 0.65%. By our arithmetic that's more than 2,200 units added in twelve months, each one work for framers, electricians, plumbers and site crews.

Manufacturing is the other engine. A 2020 City of San José report counted more than 1,300 manufacturing companies in the city, with significant concentrations in North San José and the Edenvale area but makers in every neighborhood, and an industrial real estate market tight enough to sit at a 3% vacancy rate at the time.

Census business counts are harder to use here. ZIP Code Business Patterns counts about 2,150 construction businesses and about 2,030 transportation and warehousing, wholesale and repair businesses with a San Jose postal address, but ZIP lines don't follow city limits; Alviso, part of San José since 1968, has its own postal name, for one. We treat those counts as a rough guide and lean on the DOF and city figures above. Whatever the count, work vehicles generally belong on a business auto policy, and larger contractors here should read fleet insurance for 26 to 50 vehicles.

Manufacturing fleets mix delivery vans, box trucks and service trucks, and the plants they serve often write auto requirements into vendor agreements, so the certificate can be part of getting paid.

03Driving and garaging in San Jose

Three interstates and US-101 meet in San Jose: I-880 and US-101 cross the north side near the airport, I-280 and I-680 join east of downtown, and SR-87 runs through the center while SR-85 crosses the south and SR-237 runs along the bay edge near Alviso. Capitol and Almaden expressways, Story and Tully roads, Monterey Road and Senter Road carry the cross-town service traffic.

Yards and plants cluster in North San José near the airport, in Edenvale to the south and along Monterey and Senter roads, while many service vans go home with technicians all over the city. A city this size often means long cross-town runs at peak hours, so put a realistic radius and annual mileage on the application and consider uninsured motorist coverage for the drivers who spend all day on those roads.

Fleets here cross into Santa Clara, Milpitas and Campbell daily and run south through Coyote Valley to Morgan Hill. Commercial auto across Silicon Valley covers the rest of the county.

Coyote Valley at the south end is where the city's edge meets farmland, and trucks bound for Morgan Hill and Gilroy run through it on US-101 and Monterey Road at freeway and near-freeway speeds.

04The fleet hazard to plan for in San Jose

San Jose's own fire department puts it plainly: The city is especially prone to earthquakes because of its close proximity to the San Andreas and Hayward faults. The same notice points residents to AlertSCC and the Genasys Protect app for alerts, and both are worth having on dispatchers' and drivers' phones.

For a fleet, the planning points are trucks in multi-level garages, yards with tall racks and how dispatch would work if freeways close for inspection. What an earthquake would mean for a San Jose fleet covers the coverage side.

A practical list for San Jose fleets: know which trucks sleep in parking structures, keep yard gates on manual release and set a check-in plan for drivers who are mid-route when the shaking starts.

San Jose commercial auto questions

Our fleet is spread across San Jose with no central yard. Is that a problem?
Not usually. With trucks parked at technicians' homes across the city, each one is generally rated at its own overnight address, so an accurate list of where every truck sleeps carries the most weight.
We run 40 trucks out of North San José. Can you still place us?
Forty units is well inside our range, and we'd be glad to quote it; fleets above 50 are considered case by case.
Do manufacturers' delivery trucks need cargo coverage?
Your own products in transit are usually a property or inland marine question. Customers' goods you haul for them generally call for motor truck cargo.
Does our business license address decide where trucks are rated?
Usually not. Most carriers rate trucks by where they're garaged overnight, not by the address on the business license.
Do landscapers' trailers go on the same policy as the trucks?
Usually, yes. List each trailer your landscape crews tow on the schedule; the mowers and equipment riding on it typically need an equipment floater instead.
