Quick answer

Ontario fleets run box trucks, flatbeds and pickups between distribution buildings, supply yards and job sites, and all of them can sit on one commercial auto policy, each typically rated at the address where it parks overnight. We start from a $1 million combined single limit with national carriers and price the account for the freight-heavy streets these trucks actually use.

01Why Ontario businesses buy commercial auto

Ontario's economy moves on wheels. The US Census Bureau's ZIP Code Business Patterns count about 1,725 businesses with an Ontario postal address in transportation and warehousing, wholesale trade and repair: roughly 879 wholesalers, 674 transportation and warehousing firms and 172 repair shops. In the same Census data, that is the largest such count of any Inland Empire city we track, and it sits beside about 370 construction businesses.

The city is adding people and homes, too. The California Department of Finance estimated 187,863 residents on January 1, 2026, up 1.36% in a year, and 59,000 housing units, 1,379 more than a year earlier, a 2.39% gain. New neighborhoods need graders, framers, plumbers and electricians, so contractor pickups share Ontario's streets with dock-to-dock freight.

For an Ontario owner, the schedule usually mixes very different units: a liftgate box truck on a dock route, a flatbed hauling materials, an estimator's pickup. A business auto policy written around how each vehicle is used generally rates them separately and renews them together.

03Driving and garaging in Ontario

Ontario's trucks work between three freeways. The I-10 crosses the north side of the city, north of Ontario International Airport; SR-60 runs east–west through the middle; and the I-15 carries north–south traffic along the east side toward Fontana, Jurupa Valley and the Cajon Pass. Euclid, Vineyard, Archibald, Haven and Milliken avenues are the main north–south streets, and Holt Boulevard, Mission Boulevard, Francis Street and Jurupa Street take most of the cross-town truck work.

On those streets a work pickup is the smallest thing on the road. Tractor-trailers swing wide out of distribution driveways, queue along industrial frontage and back across lanes into docks, so the claims that follow Ontario fleets tend to be low-speed ones: sideswipes, backing damage and rear-end collisions at signals. Drivers who leave extra room at warehouse entrances can avoid many of them.

Garaging splits two ways. Distributors and repair shops usually keep units inside fenced yards in the industrial areas, while trades crews often take pickups home to Upland, Chino, Rancho Cucamonga or Eastvale, and each vehicle is generally rated at the ZIP where it sleeps. Our Inland Empire commercial truck insurance page covers the region's longer routes and weather, and insurance for a fleet of five to ten vehicles explains how carriers tend to treat a growing Ontario shop.

04Staged crashes and theft around Ontario

Fraud and freight meet at Ontario's intersections: In January 2024 the Department of Insurance charged five people with insurance fraud after Ontario police responded to a crash that surveillance video from a nearby home showed had been staged, with one car left in the intersection and another driven into it. The case didn't involve a work truck, but our guide to high-claim truck corridors in the Inland Empire explains how merges, congestion and staged claims can raise fleet costs on these routes.

Theft is the other daily loss. NICB counted 14,111 vehicle thefts in the Riverside–San Bernardino–Ontario metro area in 2025, ninth in the nation by volume, so units parked outside a fenced yard should carry comprehensive coverage that can pay for a stolen truck on most policy forms. Forward cameras and the other safety steps carriers often credit can help on both fronts.

Ontario commercial auto questions

Do you insure box trucks running between Ontario warehouses all day?
Yes. Box trucks, flatbeds and liftgate units on business-to-business routes are core to what we write. If the goods belong to your customers rather than to you, add motor truck cargo coverage.
Our yard is in Ontario, but most drivers take trucks home. Which address counts?
Generally, each truck's overnight address: Yard units are rated at the yard and take-home units at the driver's ZIP. A written take-home rule makes both easier to quote.
Are the parts and diagnostic tools on our forklift repair trucks covered by auto?
Typically not. The truck is auto; the parts, tools and diagnostic gear on it belong on an equipment floater placed separately.
What auto limit do Ontario warehouse owners ask contractors to carry?
Usually a $1 million combined single limit, often with additional insured wording for the owner and the general contractor. Send the contract's insurance section with your application.
Our trucks cross into Los Angeles County every day on the I-10. Is that a problem?
Usually not. Most carriers treat that as ordinary local operation. Tell the underwriter your usual radius and daily mileage so the miles are rated correctly.
