US-101 runs through the middle of San Luis Obispo and climbs north over the Cuesta Grade toward Atascadero and Paso Robles. SR-1 leaves on Santa Rosa Street for Morro Bay, and SR-227 follows Broad Street past the airport toward the Edna Valley and Arroyo Grande. Los Osos Valley Road, Madonna Road, Tank Farm Road and South Higuera Street carry much of the commercial traffic. Northbound, the Cuesta Grade is a long climb where loaded vans slow and faster traffic stacks up behind them; southbound, it is a long descent where brakes need watching.
Downtown is tight. Marsh and Higuera streets run one way, parking is scarce for a high-roof van, and crews often load at the curb, which is where many backing and sideswipe claims start; fleet safety and claims defense covers the cameras and spotter rules that help. Many yards sit in the airport area and along South Higuera, and many commercial vans go home with techs to Los Osos, Atascadero or Arroyo Grande. The Central Coast truck and fleet insurance page covers the rest of the region.
