Quick answer

El Cajon has one of the densest trade bases in San Diego County, and its fleets are mostly vans, service trucks and pickups working East County and beyond. We write them on one commercial auto policy starting at a $1 million combined single limit, with each vehicle generally rated at its overnight address and national carriers that know service fleets.

01Why El Cajon businesses buy commercial auto

Measured against its population, El Cajon has more construction businesses than any other city on our San Diego County list. The Census Bureau's ZIP Code Business Patterns count about 650 with an El Cajon postal address, which works out to about 6.2 for every 1,000 residents, along with about 580 transportation and warehousing, wholesale and repair businesses; the largest group among those is repair, at about 209 shops.

That base isn't riding a population boom. The California Department of Finance estimated 104,932 residents on January 1, 2026, down 0.49% from a year earlier, while housing grew 0.63% to 37,245 units. Much of the work comes from servicing, repairing and rebuilding what's already standing across El Cajon and East County, which is why service vans and trucks make up so much of the traffic from local shops.

A typical El Cajon schedule mixes service body trucks, cargo vans and a pickup or two, and our California commercial auto guide explains how they share a policy.

Service fleets here live on maintenance contracts. A property manager, school district or homeowners' association that hires an HVAC or plumbing company usually spells out the auto limit and certificate wording. Underwriters, for their part, often want to know how many calls a van makes in a day, how far techs drive between them and who reviews driving records.

03Driving and garaging in El Cajon

El Cajon sits in a valley ringed by hills, and the I-8 runs straight through it: west to La Mesa, Mission Valley and the coast, east past Lakeside toward Alpine and the mountains. SR-67 starts at the I-8 and heads north toward Lakeside and Ramona, and SR-125 runs along the west side, north to Santee and south toward Spring Valley. Main Street, Broadway, Fletcher Parkway, Magnolia Avenue, Jamacha Road and Second Street carry most of the service traffic, and the industrial areas around Gillespie Field, on the north side next to Santee, hold many of the city's shops and yards.

Around Gillespie Field the driving is short and crowded: Shops move parts and equipment between buildings on Weld Boulevard, Marshall Avenue and Bradley Avenue, where forklifts, delivery trucks and employees' cars share narrow drives, and backing and tight turns, not speed, are the usual risks.

Service work here means many short stops in heat. Summer afternoons in the valley push engines, tires and batteries, and parking along older commercial strips is tight, so vans often unload from the street or an alley. Many technicians take vans home to Santee, Lakeside and Spring Valley, and each van is typically rated at that address.

The San Diego County truck and fleet insurance page covers the rest of the county, and a written safety program and in-cab cameras can give underwriters a reason to credit a busy service fleet.

04Fire along the I-8 east of El Cajon

Fire along the I-8 corridor east of town is a real hazard for El Cajon fleets: CAL FIRE's record of the West Fire shows it starting on July 6, 2018, off the I-8 and West Willows Road in Alpine, burning 504 acres and destroying 48 structures, a reminder that East County fire season isn't limited to fall.

Our wildfire guide for East County and other fleets covers turnaround plans, smoke and parked trucks, and payment for fire damage to a van usually depends on whether it carries comprehensive coverage and what its form says.

El Cajon commercial auto questions

Our HVAC techs take vans home to Santee and Lakeside. Is that a problem?
Usually not, but expect each van to be rated at the tech's address. Put your take-home and personal-use rules in writing and review MVRs every year.
Are the refrigerant, tools and parts in our vans covered by auto?
Generally, no. The van and its permanently attached shelving are auto; the contents belong on an equipment policy, placed separately.
How does the policy treat a van broken into overnight?
Damage to the van from a break-in is typically a comprehensive claim if the van carries physical damage coverage. Tools taken from it are a separate matter, outside most auto forms.
What do East County property managers ask for on auto?
Usually a $1 million combined single limit, plus additional insured status for the owner and manager. Send the service agreement, and we'll ask the carrier for that wording before the work starts.
Can a new El Cajon service company insure a single van?
In most cases, yes. One van is quoted much like any small business auto account, and more can be added by endorsement as you hire.
