Quick answer

Concord has a deep bench of contractors: crews with pickups and trailers, site trucks and service vans heading out along I-680 and SR-4. A single business auto policy can cover them, with most carriers rating each truck where it parks, and we start from a $1 million combined single limit with national carriers.

01Why businesses in Concord buy commercial auto

Census ZIP Code Business Patterns counts about 475 construction businesses with a Concord postal address, close to four for every thousand of the 122,494 residents the Department of Finance counted in January 2026, plus about 360 transportation and warehousing, wholesale and repair businesses. Population fell 0.47% over the year, while the housing stock grew 0.29%.

The big project on the horizon is the former Concord Naval Weapons Station. The city's reuse project describes how closure of the 5,028-acre Inland Area led the city and community to plan for new jobs, a variety of housing types, significant open space, parks and trails; the City Council serves as the Local Reuse Authority and is now implementing the Area Plan. Site work on that scale is likely to mean years of grading, utility and building-trade traffic.

That's work for crew pickups towing equipment and material, equipment trailers and single-axle dumps, which can share one business auto policy. Builders who add trucks as phases start should read insurance for a growing fleet, which covers how carriers tend to rate an account that's getting bigger.

Day to day, most Concord trucks aren't on large projects; they're on remodels, service calls and small commercial jobs across Concord, Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill and Clayton. That's why underwriters here tend to look closely at who drives, how many trucks go home at night and how far a typical job is from the shop.

03Driving and garaging in Concord

Concord sits where central Contra Costa's freeways meet. I-680 runs along the west side toward Walnut Creek and the Benicia Bridge, SR-4 crosses the north end toward Pittsburg and Antioch, and SR-242 connects them through the west side of town. Concord Boulevard, Clayton Road, Willow Pass Road, Ygnacio Valley Road and Treat Boulevard are the main surface routes, and Port Chicago Highway and Bailey Road lead north toward the shoreline and Bay Point.

Contractor yards and shops gather around Buchanan Field and the industrial streets near the SR-4 and SR-242 corridor, while many crews take pickups home to driveways in Concord, Clayton and Pleasant Hill. A truck and the trailer it tows usually each need their own line on the schedule, with the trailer's value stated.

East county's subdivisions in Antioch, Brentwood and Oakley are a short run out SR-4, and Martinez and the refinery belt are just west. The East Bay fleet insurance page covers the rest of Contra Costa and Alameda counties.

Afternoon traffic on SR-4 toward Antioch and on I-680 through Walnut Creek is heavy in both directions, and crews heading home after a long day are among the drivers most likely to rear-end someone in stop-and-go traffic. A no-phone rule and following-distance coaching earn their keep here.

04The fleet hazard to plan for in Concord

Concord's own fault is the hazard to know: The USGS Quaternary fault database describes the Concord fault as an active fault that traverses the town of Concord and moves by slow creep, running from Suisun Bay toward the northwest slope of Mount Diablo, with its Avon section reaching southeast to Buchanan Field.

Trucks parked under shop awnings or next to stacked material in yards near that line are the ones to think about first, and earthquake planning for Concord fleets covers the coverage side and how to reroute when overpasses close for inspection.

If your yard is near Buchanan Field, look the address up on the USGS and California Geological Survey maps and keep the gate's manual release where the first person in can find it.

Concord commercial auto questions

We're bidding work tied to the Naval Weapons Station reuse. What will the contracts ask for on auto?
Many such contracts ask for a $1 million combined single limit with additional insured wording, and possibly more limit carried through an umbrella that sits over the auto policy. Send the insurance exhibit; we'll take each endorsement it lists to the carrier, and the carrier decides whether to approve it.
Does each trailer need its own line on the policy?
It should. List each trailer with its value; liability generally follows the truck towing it, but damage to the trailer itself usually needs its own physical damage coverage.
Our crews take pickups home to Clayton and Pleasant Hill. Which address goes on the schedule?
Generally the address where each pickup spends the night. A yard address is meant for trucks that actually sleep there.
Do the pool chemicals on our trucks change anything?
Underwriters often ask what you carry and how it's secured. A spill's cleanup is usually a pollution question rather than an auto one, and pollution coverage is typically written separately.
Can a contractor with one truck and one trailer get a policy?
Yes. A Concord remodeler with one pickup and one trailer can start a business auto policy with just those two units, and both can move onto a larger schedule as the crew grows.
