SR-99 runs through Chico as a freeway, north toward Red Bluff and south toward the SR-149 junction for Oroville. SR-32 crosses the city, west toward Orland and I-5 and east up the hill toward Forest Ranch, and the Skyway leaves the south end of town for Paradise. Inside the city, East Avenue, Eaton Road, Cohasset Road, the Esplanade and Mangrove Avenue carry most service traffic. Outside it, nut harvest in late summer and fall puts shakers, sweepers and bulk trailers on the county roads, and orchard dust can drift across the pavement.
The Skyway is the route that sets Chico apart. Crews hauling materials to Ridge rebuilds climb miles of grade with loaded trailers, then come back down with the brakes working, and underwriters often ask which trucks tow up the hill and who drives them. Garaging runs from shop yards near the airport and in the southwest industrial area to home driveways and orchard parcels. Commercial auto in the North State covers Oroville, Redding and the mountain towns, and trailer coverage on a commercial auto policy explains how each trailer gets its own line.
