Fleet risk by region

California's hazards aren't the same in every county. Wildfire seasons, atmospheric-river floods, theft hot spots, high-claim freeway corridors, tule fog, mountain chain controls and earthquakes each hit certain metros harder, and each can change what a fleet should check on its policy.

Every post in this series names the metros it covers, cites the agency data behind it and links to each metro's page, where you'll find a quote preset to the area. When a major event happens, the post gets a dated update rather than a new page.

Before you decide where trucks park overnight, read our breakdown of work truck theft risks by metro. Valley and mountain fleets should review our winter driving guide for California fleets before November. Contractors taking on fire-zone work should read our guide to fleet insurance during a fire rebuild before adding trucks.

01California fleet hazards by season

Most regional hazards keep a calendar, and the policy questions follow it. Fire, flood, theft and quake damage to a parked truck generally sit on the comprehensive side of physical damage; fog, ice and freeway crashes are usually collision and liability questions.

Regional fleet risk questions

Which coverage pays when a parked truck burns, floods or is stolen?
Generally comprehensive, the other-than-collision side of physical damage; a truck insured for liability only usually lacks that protection for its own loss. Earthquake damage tends to sort the same way, subject to the form's exclusions.
Does moving trucks to another yard for the season matter to the insurer?
Yes. Each truck is usually rated where it's garaged, so tell your broker before trucks move to higher ground for storm season or start going home with employees.
When should a fleet review its regional risks?
Before each season on the calendar: fire plans ahead of red flag days, fog and chain plans before November, flood plans before the first big storm and an earthquake check once a year, since quakes keep no season.
